Ni Youyu’s Forests, waterfalls and pagoda at Perrotin in Hong Kong

“So Near Yet so Far”, is Ni Youyu’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, which showcases 12 pieces from the artist’s ongoing series of work. Among the artworks on display: Forest, Waterfall, Pagoda, Dust, Inches of Time and Freewheeling trip. Ni Youyu (b.1984) currently lives and works in Shanghai. He is graduated from Fine Art College of Shanghai University in 2007 where he was specialized in traditional Chinese painting. The exhibition is on view until July 14th.

For this piece pagoda, the artist collected Buddhist statues wooden bases that he is pilled up together to create a Chinese pagoda. Usually the attention of the viewers doesn’t go to the statue base but more to the statue itself.

In the series of work “Freewheeling Trip” (2011) , the artist put together thousands of old landscape photographs that he collected during his trips and took a long time to observe all the details. Then he selected a group of “related” photographs, cut them and reassembled the pieces into some virtual landscape photographs.

Deceptive light 2015-2017 from Ni Youyu’s water washed painting series. This technique, refers to using water under different pressures to flush and wash the acrylics when they are not completely dry.
