Hao Liang “Portraits & Wonders” in New York
“Portraits and Wonders” is Hao Liang’s first solo exhibition in the United States, presented by Gagosian Gallery in New York from Jun 6th to June 23rd 2018. The show is featuring new works by the up-and-coming Chinese artist working in traditional Chinese ink painting.
In my study of traditional ink and wash paintings, my view of time and space staggers and jumps. When I read the artistic theories of Dong Qichang, the Ming dynasty scholar and painter, I suddenly think of [Wassily] Kandinsky. When I travel in nature, I see the details of ancient Chinese paintings, flashing before me like a film montage by [Sergei] Eisenstein.

“In the current Chinese culture dilemma, it might be more interesting to participate and comprehend the contemporary cultural constructs through searching for a modernity intrinsic to Chinese culture,” he tells artnet News in an interview with Taylor Dafoe

Upon his sudden enlightenment from the painting theories of the Ming artist Dong Xiangguang (Dong Qichang) and the Russian painter Kandinsky, Hao Liang from Sichuan painted a spectacle reminiscent of vines winding around a twisting pine. Inscribed by Yue Wi from Shanxi in the lunar month of December 2017.
